Why counts differ between networks
Networks don’t agree on what a “character” is. A simple text.length in JavaScript counts UTF-16 code units, so a single family emoji can look like 11 characters. TallyReel Post counts graphemes — what a person sees as one character — which matches how modern networks count.
- X replaces every link with a 23-character t.co link, however long the original URL is.
- Mastodon also counts links as 23, and only counts the username part of a remote mention like @name@server.social.
- Telegram allows 4,096 characters in a text message but only 1,024 in a photo or video caption — tick “includes a photo or video” to check against the caption limit.
